Scared of My Shadow is a documentary that explores how real and perceived fears are affecting the way in which North Americans raise their children and live their lives.
Filmmaker Mark Miller embarks on an odyssey sitting down with real families who are worried about their kids safety and the safety of their communities. Miller investigates how a culture of fear, spawned by media outlets and overzealous law enforcement agencies, has created a generation of bubble-wrapped children unable to fend for themselves. Miller then presents the various sociological theories about the damage this “over protection” may have on Canadian society a generation from now.
Themes include the role of media in public paranoia, changing patterns in parenting, anxiety based disease, public health, crime trends in rural and urban Canada, adolescent development as well as violence towards, and by, young people.
