Retail is a gender-bending look at the exploits of a scrappy drag queen and his ‘fag hag’ sidekick in a run-down suburban shopping mall. Set in the ordinarily surreal world of the decaying Parkwest Mall, Retail is the story of the bonds of friendship and family that form between two unique couples and the mall’s many quirky inhabitants.
Rife with double-entendres, sexual innuendo and cross-dressing, Retail contrasts the complex relationship of Shawn, the drag queen, and Jill, his best friend, with the marriage of a seemingly straight-laced heterosexual couple, Amber and Duncan. As their hilarious secrets and fantasies are revealed we see that nobody is as straight as they seem.
The series features an engaging cast including Alex Woods (Burning Mussolini, Prom Wars), Grace Lynn Kung (Billable Hours, Slings & Arrows), Aaron Merke (Video on Trial, Ed the Sock’s Night Party), Sadie LeBlanc (Rumours, Naked Josh), Christopher Russell (Beautiful People, Land of the Dead), features Alex Chapman (Queer as Folk, Lilies) as Miss Bitters and Mike Bell (Walk All Over Me, Something Beneath) as the mall security guard.
With Comedy Award-winning director Shawn Alex Thompson (Puppets Who Kill, An American in Canada) at the helm, and Gemini Award-winning cinematographer Luc Montpellier (Away From Her, At The Hotel) behind the lens, Retail is a beautifully shot HD comedy you can’t miss.
This all-Canadian comedy was created by Noam Gonick (Stryker, Hey Happy), teleplay is by Brad Fraser (Queer as Folk, Leaving Metropolis) and story edited by Jeremy Boxen (Kenny vs. Spenny, At the Hotel)
